What type of wax we use of our candles?

We use soy wax for our candles. Soy wax is softer than paraffin wax with a lower melting temperature burns up to 50% longer than wax refined from crude oil. For our candles we use EcoSoya CB-Advanced Soy, which is made from pure 100% soybeans. Our soybean wax is a 100% natural, 100% renewable resource unlike the more common petroleum-based paraffin wax. Soybean wax is clean, safe, non-toxic and biodegradable. They have a beneficial environmental impact, in that they return nitrogen to the soil. The advantage of Soybean wax is that it liquefies across the surface of the container as the candle burns causing better fragrance disbursement.

Wick trimming

Keep wick trimmed to 1/8 inch at all times. The wick should be trimmed every 4 hours of burn time. First, extinguish the flame; let the candle come to room temperature and trim the wick to 1/8 of inch before relighting.

Keeping the wick trimmed at all times helps control the amount of “fuel” or wax that is present. By keeping the amount of fuel limited, the flame will create ideal complete combustion where carbon particles are absorbed by the flame. This means less soot is formed while the candle is burning. The formation of soot has nothing to do with the type of wax (soy, paraffin, vegetable, or other) as all burning items create soot as a product of incomplete combustion. It all has to do with the quality of the wick and the proper care of the candle!

How long should I burn a candle?

Candles should not be burned for more than four hours at a time. It is recommended that they burned for four hours, then extinguished and let cool for two hours before relighting. Always extinguish a candle if the flame gets too close to the candleholder or container. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains (½ inch if a container candle or jar candle).

Is candle soot harmful?

No. The minuscule amount of soot produced by a candle is the natural by product of incomplete combustion. Candle soot is composed primarily of elemental carbon particles, and is similar to the soot given off by kitchen toasters and cooking oils. These everyday household sources of soot are not considered a health concern, and are chemically different from the soot formed by the burning of diesel fuel, coal, gasoline, etc.

Why do some candles have metal-core wicks?

Metal-core wicks are sometimes used in container candles and votives to keep the wick upright when the surrounding wax liquefies during burning. Today’s metal-core wicks are made with either zinc or tin. Scientific studies have repeatedly shown both zinc- and tin-core wicks to be safe and non-toxic.

Safety Tips

Do not leave lit candles unattended

Keep burning candles away from children and pets

Candles should be kept away from drafts and flammable materials

Place candles on heat resistant surfaces – use a tile on wood tabletops

What is Chalk Paint?

We use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint because it is so easy to work with. As we have been using it to paint our furniture we thought to use it also to paint our mason jars. The beauty of chalk paint is that it is easy, fun and makes amazing results.

Chalk Paint is eco-friendly too. It contains extremely low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and has no odor.

Why are the teacups expensive?

Most of our teacups and glass containers are hand selected by myself and Greg at Antique markets from around the world and in NYC. We also buy a fair amount online as well. They are usually antique teacups that can be sold for $100 dollars for the cup alone. Each of our candle filled teacups are unique in that they are antique and poured by hand with scents we believe will complement the beauty of the cups themselves.

Antique items

Because of the nature of antique items, sometimes they come to us already chipped or damaged in some slight way. We do our best to select pieces of the best quality, but sometimes the cup is so beautiful that we ignore and minor chips or dings in the cup, we hope that you agree with us as well. We do our best to make sure we document any of these problems in the descriptions of the pieces, but if we missed one and you’re not happy, we will work with you to make sure you, the customer are satisfied.
